Why is Jerusalem important to Muslims? لماذا القدس هامة للمسلمين
An article by Dr. Mohammad Bahaa Wasfy – 22 January 2017
.
All Muslims (liberal, moderate, conservative, extremist) regard Jerusalem (Quds) an Islamic city and a sacred place of the highest importance.
 .
In about 621 AD Prophet Muhammad travelled to Al-Quds (Jerusalem) at night (Night Journey) where he led all God's prophets (including for example Abraham, Moses, Jesus) in prayer (as an expression of the unity of faith -- One faith, One God), then Prophet Muhammad rose to heaven in the "Ascent" to meet God (Allah) as Moses went to meet God in Sinai, Egypt, 4000 years ago. During Muhammad’s “Ascent”, God (Allah) ordained on Muslims five daily prayers. Then Prophet Muhammad visited God's Prophets individually. Later, he was shown scenes from Heaven (Paradise) and Hell.
.
Five years after Prophet Muhammad’s death in 632 AD, the Muslim army entered Jerusalem peacefully in 637 AD. Upon the request of the Christians of Jerusalem then, Omar ibn Al-Khattab, Prophet Muhammad’s second successor (Caliph), travelled there, was received by Archbishop Sphorous of the Church of the Sepulcher. Omar then wrote a document “a pledge of peaceful co-existence” for all the Christians living there. While in Jerusalem, Omar cleaned with his own hands the place where Prophet Muhammad led other prophets in prayer during the “Night Journey”. On this place, there is now Al=Masjid Al-Aqsa (The Farthest Mosque) to which Muslims directed their faces during five daily prayers until God (Allah) changed their Qibla (prayer direction) to Makka (Mecca). Now Jewish settlers desecrate Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa on a daily basis under the protection of Israeli police.
