Report: Netanyahu Threatened New Zealand

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly called New Zealand’s foreign minister before last week’s United Nations vote on the settlements and threatened that “Your actions are a declaration of war,” according to a new Haaretz report. New Zealand—along with Senegal, Malaysia, and Venezuela—led a move to resubmit for a vote on a resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. A few hours before Netanyahu’s last-ditch effort to prevent the vote, a senior Israeli foreign ministry official in Jerusalem called New Zealand’s ambassador to Israel “and warned that if New Zealand’s move came to a vote, Israel might close its embassy in Wellington in protest,” Haaretz additionally reported.

Secretary of State John Kerry laid out his case Wednesday for why the U.S. abstained from a United Nations Security Council vote to condemn Israel for its settlement activity, paving the way for it to be approved. During his 11 a.m. speech, Kerry said that a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine is the “only way to achieve a just and lasting peace” and that increased settlement activity on the part of Israel is threatening that peace process. “If the choice is one state, Israel can either be Jewish or democratic. It cannot be both,” Kerry said in a blistering critique of the current “extreme” Israeli government. He declared that the Obama administration has done more for Israel’s security than any past U.S. administration. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded almost immediately to the speech. “What he did was to spend most of his speech blaming Israel for the lack of peace by passionately condemning a policy of enabling Jews to live in their historic homeland and in their eternal capital, Jerusalem,” he said.

Report: U.S. to Announce Russia Retaliation Efforts on Thursday

The U.S. will announce a series of measures aimed at retaliating against Russia over its alleged efforts to meddle in the presidential election through a series of cyberattacks aimed at Democrats, CNN reported. The retaliation efforts are reportedly expected to include naming the people involved and expanding sanctions against Moscow. At his year-end press conference earlier this month, President Obama indicated that senior leadership within the Russian government ordered the hacks of the Democratic National Committee network as well as the email account of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta. A government report ordered by Obama earlier this month on foreign hacking of U.S. political institutions is due to be released in January.

Dylann Roof, who is currently being sentenced after he was convicted last week of killing nine black worshippers in Charleston, said on Wednesday he doesn't intend to introduce any evidence or call any witnesses to the stand during his defense. The 22-year-old, who is defending himself, said during the hearing that he'll only make an opening statement. He faces a possible death sentence in the case. The sentencing phase of the trial begins on Jan. 3. "As far as I know, I am not intending to offer any evidence at all or call any witnesses whatsoever," he told the judge. U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel told Roof he may change his mind about serving as his own counsel up until the start of the proceedings. "You know my feeling on this," Gergel said. "I think it's a bad idea."

Israel’s attorney general’s office has reportedly launched a criminal probe into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over allegations of bribery and fraud. Netanyahu’s government has described the accusations as false and part of an attempt to undermine his legitimacy. The reported investigation into Netanyahu stems from his foreign trips during his time as Israel’s foreign minister, in addition to an allegation that he improperly accepted 1 million euros.

Carrie Fisher Will Appear on Two New ‘Family Guy’ Episodes

Before her untimely death this week, Carrie Fisher reportedly completed voice-acting work for two new episodes of Family Guy, likely set to air during the show's 15th season next year. Since 2005, Fisher has appeared in more than 20 episodes of the animated series of Peter Griffin's boss Angela, including in one of the show's Star Wars parodies in which she played Angela as Mon Mothma. In addition to the upcoming Family Guy episodes, Fisher will appear one final time as Princess Leia in next December's Star Wars: Episode VIII, which wrapped shooting this past July and is currently in post-production.
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane was among the many celebrities and former colleagues to pay tribute to Fisher on Twitter following the news that she had passed.

President-elect Donald Trump has evidently turned on President Barack Obama, with whom he has had a chummy relationship since being elected last month. The real-estate mogul blasted the current occupant of the Oval Office on Twitter on Wednesday for his “inflammatory” statements. “Doing my best to disregard the many inflammatory President O statements and roadblocks. Thought it was going to be a smooth transition—NOT!” Trump wrote, seemingly in response to Obama’s suggestion that he would’ve defeated Trump in a head-to-head matchup. He also accused the Obama administration of treating Israel with “total disdain and disrespect.” That remark earned high praise from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who tweeted in response: “President-elect Trump, thank you for your warm friendship and your clear-cut support for Israel!”

German police have detained a 40-year-old Tunisian man who is a possible accomplice of Anis Amri, the man accused of carrying out the terror attack in Berlin last week. Amri was shot dead in Milan a few days after escaping the crime scene in Germany, where he rammed a truck into a Christmas market, killing 12 people and injuring dozens more. Police were led to the possible accomplice, whose name was not released, through Amri’s cellphone. “Further investigations will show whether the suspicions about him firm up,” said the public prosecutor general. In a video released by ISIS, Amri is seen pledging allegiance to the terror group before the attack.

A flight-data recorder recovered from a Russian jet that crashed into the Black Sea on Sunday has reportedly revealed the aircraft had faulty wing flaps. Aviation sources told the Interfax news agency that the panels on the wings, which are designed to help lift an aircraft, allegedly did not open in sync properly. The issue led the pilots to lose control of the plane at a critical moment. The flight recorder reportedly captured the crew’s last words: “The flaps, hell... !” The TU-154 airliner crashed just two minutes after takeoff from Sochi. It was bound for an air force base in Syria, where the renowned Russian military choir on board was set to perform in a new year’s concert. Ninety-two people on board were killed, including the crew, journalists, humanitarians, and musicians.

During a historic trip to Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor, President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday warned against repeating the “horrors of war.” Both leaders dropped purple flower petals into the water near the wreckage of the USS Arizona. The Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base 75 years ago killed more than 2,300 Americans and triggered the nation’s entry to World War II. “As the prime minister of Japan, I offer my sincere and everlasting condolences to the souls of those who lost their lives here, as well as to the spirits of all the brave men and women whose lives were taken by a war that commenced in this very place,” Abe said at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Abe is Japan’s first leader to visit Pearl Harbor with a sitting U.S. president.
